被動回避測試用于評估記憶功能，它是基于動物學會避免的特定環(huán)境背景與厭惡刺激(以輕微的足部休克為代表)之間形成的聯(lián)系。

被動避讓裝置基本上由控制器和一個由一個滑動門分成兩個隔間的籠子組成。傾斜的地板確保了一個簡單而可靠的探測機制來記錄動物在兩個隔間中的運動。

被動回避籠（黑白箱）：

籠子分為兩部分，明亮和黑暗隔間。明亮間是白色的，由一個燈具照明(3LED，白光)；黑暗間是黑暗的，其網(wǎng)格地板帶電擊。

兩個隔間被一個分隔板分開，這個隔板的地板上有一個自動的滑動門。根據(jù)經(jīng)驗或文獻建議的數(shù)據(jù)，可以在控制器的觸摸屏上預設(shè)門延遲和沖擊參數(shù)。

當嚙齒動物在白色隔間時，可以按下按鈕激活計時器，規(guī)定在預設(shè)的延遲后開門。門開啟時啟用了延遲計時器，它在動物穿過后停止，延遲時間以0.1 s 顯示。為了防止動物因為關(guān)門感到不安或受到傷害，在穿過一秒鐘后，門就會關(guān)上。
